Cairns Student Lodge at Smithfield is home to the team of 55 Swiss riders during the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, which wraps up tomorrow.

General manager Hamish Allardice said the stay provided the venue with a much-needed boost during the current university break.

“We’ve only got 67 per cent occupancy at the moment so to have them here is fantastic,” he said.
“The financial indication of having them here is great, as well as the cultural benefits for the organisation.”

Mr Allardice said hosting the Swiss team would have long-term benefits for the lodge, placing it on the world map for future events.
Organisers predicted about $15 million would be poured into the Far North economy during the mountain bike championships.
